He received Ph.D. degree of engineering from the University of Warwick in 1998. He also received postdoctoral training in Academia Sinica, Taiwan, and the Institute of Neuroscience, Queen's Medical Center, University of Nottingham in the U.K. He was also an adjunct assistant professor in the Life Science Department of the National Taiwan Normal University.
