Pretreatment with low-dose lipopolysaccharide reduced myeloperoxidase activity (neutrophil infiltration) and wet-dry ratio (pulmonary edema) in the lungs of animals subjected to Gram-negative or Gram-positive shock, demonstrating tolerance [1].

After lipopolysaccharide treatment, there was no difference in the level of tumor necrosis factor-alpha in lungs of young and aged animals, but interleukin-1beta was two-fold higher in the lungs of the aged group [2].
