Disease relevance of 3-O-Methylmannose

The methylmannose polysaccharide, found in the cytoplasm of Mycobacterium smegmatis, is composed of 3-O-methylmannose units joined in alpha 1----4 linkage in a chain terminated by unmethylated mannose at the nonreducing end [1].

The labeled product formed from S-[methyl-3H]adenosylmethionine and Man-MeMan5-OCH3 was characterized both by its resistance to periodate oxidation and by the release of labeled 3-O-methylmannose upon acid hydrolysis [3].
The oligosaccharides with the highest content of 3-O-methylmannose residues appeared to be completely resistant to alpha-mannosidase degradation; they were, however, cleaved by endo-beta-N-acetylglucosaminidase H [4].
Skin test active fractions contained glucose, mannose, 3-O-methylmannose, glucosamine, and amino acids [5].
The isolates contained glutamic acid, glycine, alanine and meso-diaminopimelic acid in the cell wall, 3-O-methylmannose, mannose, galactose and glucose as the whole-cell sugars and MK-10(H(6)), MK-10(H(4)), MK-9(H(6)) and MK-9(H(4)) as the predominant isoprenoid quinones [6].
