We found MAEBL of the rodent malaria parasite, Plasmodium berghei, to be specifically produced by the sporozoites in the oocyst and localized in their micronemes, which are secretory organelles involved in malarial parasite invasion into the host cell [1].
MAEBL is essential for malarial sporozoite infection of the mosquito salivary gland [1].
MAEBL has a molecular structure homologous to the Duffy binding-like family of erythrocyte binding proteins located in the micronemes of merozoites [2].
MAEBL has a tandem duplication of this AMA-1-like domain, and both of these cysteine-rich domains bound erythrocytes when expressed in vitro [2].
The subcellular distribution of MAEBL, a sporozoite surface protein, is developmentally regulated from presumed storage organelles in day 15 oocysts to uniform distribution on the surface in day 22 oocysts [3].

Polyclonal antibodies to r-PfM2 recognized native MAEBL protein in blood stage schizont extracts of the parasite on Western blots and within the apical complex of free merozoites, by indirect immunofluorescent assay (IFA) [4].
We report here the sequence analysis and gene structure of the Plasmodium falciparum maebl gene [4].
MAEBL expression in P. falciparum sporozoites was also detected by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and IFA [4].
