High impact information on H2A

  • One sequence contains the contiguous H2B and H3 genes and their interdigitated spacer regions; the other comprises the H2A gene and flanking spacer sequences [1].
  • The DNA sequence of sea urchin (S. purpuratus) H2A, H2B and H3 histone coding and spacer regions [1].
  • Analysis of the coding regions reveals a methionine residue within the H2A protein [1].
  • H2A, which generally lacks this amino acid, contains methionine only in a protein variant which is synthesized in early sea urchin embryogenesis [1].
  • While there is no sperm-specific H2a protein, a limited set of late histone H2a genes encoding primarily the H2a-beta subtype is expressed in testis [2].

Biological context of H2A

  • Amino acid sequences derived from nucleotide sequences of late H2A and H2B gistone genes differ substantially from amino acid sequences of their late counterparts [3].
  • We show, by an electron microscope method, that for H2A, with a length of 0.52 kilobases (kb), one end of the gene is situated 0.02 to 0.03 kb from one RI site, and that there is a Hind III site within this gene at about 0.13 kb from the end phe other RI site of this plasmid [4].

Other interactions of H2A

  • A few, however, occur in positions that do not mutate frequently and thus may reflect functional differences between the early and late forms of the H2A and H2B proteins [3].
  • It is known that there are two histone genes, H3 and H2A, on pSp17 [4].
