Disease relevance of RGMA

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the clinical features and family history of patients with idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE), with pure grand mal (GM), divided into epilepsies with GM occurring exclusively on awakening (GMA) and random GM (RGM) [1].

Seizure-provoking factors, especially sleep deprivation, were significantly (P=0.001) more common in patients with GMA (52/68, 77%) than in the group with RGM (13/30, 43%) [1].

Following central nervous system injury, RGM, a novel, potent axonal growth inhibitor, is present in axonal growth impediments: the mature myelin, choroid plexus, and components of the developing scar [2].
RESULTS: In normal brains, RGM expression was detected on the perikarya of some neurons, choroid plexus, smooth muscle and endothelial cells, oligodendrocytes, and myelinated white matter fibers [2].
During the first week after insult, RGM expression remained confined to neurons, smooth muscle and endothelial cells, and leukocytes infiltrating the lesion [2].

METHODS: Desflurane in concentrations of 0% to 3% in 0.5% increments and 3% to 12% in 1% increments in 2 L.min-1 oxygen was delivered simultaneously to an Ohmeda 5250 RGM desflurane channel, an Ohmeda 5250 RGM isoflurane channel, and a Datex Capnomac Ultima isoflurane channel at room temperature and atmospheric pressure [4].

However, the role of RGM in adult central nervous system lesions remains to be clarified [2].
In the dentate gyrus, RGM immunostaining was confined to the inner molecular layer, whereas the outer molecular layers targeted by entorhinal fibers remained free [5].

Associations of RGMA with chemical compounds

By comparing the readings from the desflurane channel of Ohmeda RGM and the isoflurane channels from Ohmeda RGM and Datex Capnomac Ultima respectively, the linear regression relationship and the slope of the fitted line (conversion factor) between two channels were obtained [4].
