Disease relevance of pknB

The Mycobacterium tuberculosis genome contains 11 serine/threonine kinase genes including two, pknA and pknB, that are part of an operon encoding genes involved in cell shape control and cell wall synthesis [1].
The pknB gene was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli [2].

High impact information on pknB

Partial depletion of pknA or pknB results in narrow, elongated cells [1].
Analysis of pknB expression in Mycobacterium tuberculosis indicates the presence of pknB mRNA in (i) organisms grown in vitro in bacteriological media, (ii) a murine macrophage in vitro infection model, and (iii) in vivo alveolar macrophages from a patient with tuberculosis [2].

Biological context of pknB

It has been suggested that mstp is a part of a gene cluster that also includes two Ser/Thr kinases pknA and pknB [3].
