Disease relevance of glpT

The promoter-proximal gene (glpT) of the glpT-glpQ operon of Escherichia coli encodes a membrane permease responsible for active transport of sn-glycerol 3-phosphate [1].

The heterologous exchange showed a maximal velocity of 130 nmol/min/mg protein via the glpT system and 11 nmol/min/mg protein for the uhpT system [3].
The substrates of the phosphodiesterase had no affinity for the glpT-encoded active transport system [1].
In addition, two integration host factor (IHF) binding sites were identified downstream of the glpT transcriptional start site at positions +15 to +51 and +193 to +227 [4].

Glucose and other phosphotransferase system sugars inhibit Pi efflux by repressing glpT expression [6].
The expression of recombinant plasmids carrying the glpA gene (anaerobic glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase) and the closely linked glpT gene (glycerol 3-phosphate transport) were studied under aerobic and anaerobic conditions [7].

Analytical, diagnostic and therapeutic context of glpT

A Northern blot analysis showed that the glpT genes in both Eagan and Rd strains were transcribed on a RNA of approximately 1.4 kb in size [2].
