Disease relevance of glbN

  • The genome of the unicellular cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 contains a gene (slr2097, glbN) encoding a 123 amino-acid product with sequence similarity to globins [1].
  • The glbN gene for the hemoglobin of Synechoccocus sp. PCC 7002, a cyanobacterium incapable of nitrogen fixation, was cloned and overexpressed in Escherichia coli [2].
  • The rate constant for heme loss from the major isomer was estimated to be 0.01 h(-1) by optical spectroscopy, close to the value for myoglobin and decades slower than in the related Nostoc commune cyanoglobin [3].
