Disease relevance of Sigmoidoscopy

High impact information on Sigmoidoscopy

  • US Preventive Services Task Force. Sigmoidoscopy in the periodic health examination of asymptomatic adults [6].
  • METHODS: Participants were asymptomatic subjects who underwent screening flexible sigmoidoscopy (FSG) within the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial. Subjects underwent single-slice, computerized tomography scanning to measure VAT and serum fasting insulin, IGF-I, and IGFBP-3 measurements [7].
  • The strategies included conventional serial flexible sigmoidoscopy and two different APC gene testing approaches [8].
  • Evaluations included a review of symptoms, flexible sigmoidoscopy, rectal biopsy, and rectal dialysis to measure prostaglandin E2 and leukotriene B4 levels [9].
  • Eight months later, a 72 hour oral rechallenge period of ranitidine, was performed immediately preceded (period 1) and followed (period 2) by sigmoidoscopy and biopsy [10].

Gene context of Sigmoidoscopy

  • Additionally, we identified a new FAP patient, in whom sigmoidoscopy showed the presence of adenomatous polyps throughout the colon [21].
  • Fecal alpha 1-antitrypsin was significantly higher in patients with mucosal disease visualized at upper endoscopy or flexible sigmoidoscopy than in those without gross abnormalities (13.5 +/- 5.8 mg/g dry stool versus 2.4 +/- 0.7 mg/g dry stool; P = 0.005) [22].
  • METHODS: From 1981-1983, 549 White men were examined by flexible sigmoidoscopy and completed self-administered questionnaires including smoking histories [23].
  • Peri-procedural discomfort was significantly more common in patients undergoing flexible sigmoidoscopy than with colonoscopy (p < 0.0005) [24].
  • CONCLUSIONS: For patients with CD4 counts < 100/mm3 and unexplained AIDS-related diarrhea, flexible sigmoidoscopy with biopsy is a sufficiently thorough endoscopic evaluation [25].
