High impact information on Small-Area Analysis

A small area study of cancer incidence, 1974-1986, near 20 high power television (TV) and frequency modulation (FM) radio transmitters in Great Britain was carried out to place in context the findings of an earlier study around the Sutton Coldfield transmitter [1].
Incidence data from the UK national children's tumour registry (CCRG) for 1968-1983 have recently become available for small area analyses by location at diagnosis (OPCS, 1991) [2].
The model--developed using data from 80 passive sampler sites in Huddersfield, as part of the SAVIAH (Small Area Variations in Air Quality and Health) project--uses data on traffic flows and land cover in the 300-m buffer zone around each site, and altitude of the site, as predictors of NO2 concentrations [3].
As is the case for all elective procedures, small area variations occur in rates of surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome [4].
Adjusted admission rates for respiratory distress (COPD, asthma, bronchitis, and pneumonia) varied up to 3.09-fold between the highest and lowest hospital market areas in 1986 for the state of Ohio. Reasons for the variability can be determined through small area analysis techniques with the help of area physicians [5].
