Gene context of Hypericum

  • St. John's wort extracts and some of their constituents potently inhibit ultimate carcinogen formation from benzo[a]pyrene-7,8-dihydrodiol by human CYP1A1 [31].
  • Coordinate induction of both cytochrome P4503A and MDR1 by St John's wort in healthy subjects [33].
  • RESULTS: Comparisons of presupplementation and postsupplementation ratios indicated that St John's wort significantly induced the activity of CYP2E1 and CYP3A4 (P <.0001) [34].
  • Reduced therapeutic efficacy of drugs metabolized by CYP3A should be anticipated during long-term administration of St John's wort [35].
  • There was no change in CYP1A2, CYP2C9, or CYP2D6 activities as a result of St John's wort administration [35].
