Division of labor: specialization of sphingosine kinases in mast cells.

Generation of sphingosine-1-phosphate by sphingosine kinases (SphKs) promotes allergic inflammatory diseases, but the roles of the individual SphK isoforms are unclear. Olivera et al. (2007) show that SphK2 regulates mast cell activation whereas SphK1 enhances susceptibility to antigen challenge in vivo.[1]
