Isolation and structure elucidation of acinetobactin, a novel siderophore from Acinetobacter baumannii [1].
The Acinetobacter baumannii type strain, ATCC 19606, secretes acinetobactin, a catechol siderophore highly related to the iron chelator anguibactin produced by the fish pathogen Vibrio anguillarum (Listonella anguillarum) [2].

In order to assimilate iron, Acinetobacter baumannii ATCC 19606(T) produces a siderophore named acinetobactin (Ab) that is composed of equimolar quantities of 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHBA), L-threonine and N-hydroxyhistamine [3].
Similar results were obtained using the culture supernatant of the Acinetobacter baumannii 19606 prototype strain that secretes the histamine-containing siderophore acinetobactin [4].
