Disease relevance of Nifurzide

This paper presents a study of the interactions between Escherichia coli cells and nifurzide, a nitrofuran derivative which is used as an intestinal antiinfectious agent [1].
Although Gram-negative enteropathogenic bacteria are the target strains of nifurzide and nifuroxazide treatments, neither drug affected faecal counts of in vitro-susceptible Enterobacteriaceae in healthy volunteers [2].

High impact information on Nifurzide

After cell disruption, similar amounts of nifurzide were found in the cytoplasm, cytoplasmic membranes, and cell wall, respectively [1].
In the faeces 20 per cent of the radioactivity recovered was associated with unchanged nifuroxazide as compared with 100 per cent for nifurzide [3].
As nitrofurans have been reported to interact with DNA, we tested the ability of nifurzide to inhibit plasmid transfer [4].
Therefore, effect of high doses of nifurzide was investigated in gnotobiotic mice [2].
