Disease relevance of p-Xylenol

Molecular and biochemical characterization of the xlnD-encoded 3-hydroxybenzoate 6-hydroxylase involved in the degradation of 2,5-xylenol via the gentisate pathway in Pseudomonas alcaligenes NCIMB 9867 [1].
Pseudomonas alcaligenes NCIB 9867 (strain P25X), which grows on 2,5-xylenol and harbours the plasmid RP4, was mated with a plasmid-free derivative of Pseudomonas putida NCIB 9869, strain RA713, which cannot grow on 2,5-xylenol [2].

High impact information on p-Xylenol

Phenol hydroxylase converted a broad range of substrates, as it was also able to transform the nongrowth substrates 2,4-dimethylphenol and 2,5-dimethylphenol into 3,5-dimethylcatechol and 3,6-dimethylcatechol, respectively, which, however, were not cleaved by catechol 2,3-dioxygenase [3].
These findings suggest the presence of a plasmid for 2,5-xylenol degradation which codes for synthesis of early degradative enzymes [4].
The regulation of the inducible set of gentisate pathway enzymes used by Pseudomonas alcaligenes (P25X1) has been studied in strains derived from mutant strains of P25X1 that had lost the constitutive enzymes that degrade m-cresol, 2,5-xylenol and 3,5-xylenol [5].
