GDNF-AS1  -  GDNF antisense RNA 1 (head to head)

Homo sapiens

Synonyms: GDNFOS

  • Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) has been effective therapy in laboratory animal models of Parkinson’s disease. GDNFOS gene was discovered at the opposite strand of GDNF gene (head to head) that has four exons that are spliced into different isoforms. GDNFOS1 and 2 lncRNAs and GDNFOS3 encodes a protein of 105 amino acids [1].
  • GDNFOS is primate specific gene and GDNFOS-3 antibody recognized a 35 kDa band in Western blot of human embryonic kidney (HEK293) and postmortem human middle temporal gyrus tissue but not in rat SH-SY5Y and Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell lines, rat kidney and rat prefrontal cortex tissues. GDNFOS-3 peptide is downregulated in Alzheimer's patient brains [1] .
  • Inhibition of GDNFOS expression leads upregulates GDNF mRNA by three- to six fold. Pharmacological approaches targeting GDNFOS-1 and -2 lncRNAs and GDNFOS-3 peptide are potential therapeutics for neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases [2]
