It was shown that the two cysteine residues in the Ros protein were essential for the complementation of the exopolysaccharide synthesis defect of ros mutant strains [2].
The other contains a gene termed exoY which encodes a glycosyltransferase that is involved in one of the early steps in exopolysaccharide synthesis [3].
Two DNA loci from Sp7 genome that complement mutations in the exopolysaccharide synthesis genes, exoB and exoC, of R. meliloti were also shown to be present on the plasmid [4].
