Disease relevance of UL50

Comparative analysis of DNA sequences located between the coding regions of genes UL49 and UL50 of herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and -2) has revealed a small open reading frame (ORF) of 91 and 87 codons respectively with the characteristics of a genuine protein-coding region [1].
The resulting recombinant plasmid, pET-3a/UL50, was transformed into E. coli BL21(DE3)pLysS cells, conferring expression of HSV-1 dUTPase as 2-3% of the soluble protein inducible by isopropyl thiogalactoside [2].
Challenge infection with the highly virulent NIA-3 strain of PrV showed that prior infection with PrV UL50- conferred protection against Aujeszky's disease [3].

High impact information on UL50

Recently we identified the gene encoding the deoxyuridine-triphosphatase (dUTPase) of PrV as the homolog of the UL50 gene of herpes simplex virus type 1 [3].

Analytical, diagnostic and therapeutic context of UL50

Here we show that replication of PrV UL50- in cell culture was only slightly impaired as compared to wild-type PrV strain Ka [3].
