Disease relevance of tRNA-Lys

Purified Escherichia coli tRNAAla and tRNALys were each converted to modified species terminating in 2'- and 3'-deoxyadenosine [1].
A competitive type of inhibition of HIV reverse transcriptase by tRNALys, but not by tRNAVal, is observed when viral RNA or activated DNA are used as templates [2].

Import of a tRNALys with a mutation in the anticodon preventing recognition of the lysine codons does not lead to any rescue, whereas downregulation of the transgenic tRNAs by small interfering RNA (siRNA) transiently abolishes the functional rescue, showing that this rescue is due to the import [4].

It shows higher activity on liver tRNAMet f, tRNAMet m, and tRNALys than on unfractionated liver tRNA [7].
