A threonine residue in the regulatory segment, which when phosphorylated renders CaMKII calmodulin independent, is held apart from the catalytic sites by the organization of the dimer [1].
Other genes induced across most timepoints included lipoxygenase, calmodulin, phospholipase C, metallothionein-like protein, and chalcone reductase [2].
The "multi-functional" Ca(2+) and calmodulin-dependent protein kinase, type II (CaMK-II) is an evolutionarily conserved protein [3].
Here we use the unique possibility offered by the C. elegans model system to inactivate the single CaM gene (cmd-1) through RNA interference (RNAi) [4].
The signaling cascade is only partially dependent on the phospholipase C beta (EGL-8) and is negatively regulated by G alpha(o) [GOA-1 (G-protein, O, alpha subunit family member 1)] and calcium/calmodulin-dependent kinase [UNC-43 (uncoordinated family member 43)] [5].
