Sdb23p is essential for cell viability and is required for nuclear pre-mRNA splicing both in vivo and in vitro [1].
The LSM4 gene of Saccharomyces cerevisiae codes for an essential protein involved in pre-mRNA splicing and also in mRNA decapping, a crucial step for mRNA degradation [2].
Herein, we demonstrate that S. cerevisiae cells expressing the truncated LSM4 protein of K. lactis showed the phenotypic markers of yeast apoptosis such as chromatin condensation, DNA fragmentation, and accumulation of reactive oxygen species [2].
LSM2 and LSM4, but not other LSM genes, act as allele-specific, low-copy suppressors of mutations in Lsm8p [3].

Biological context of LSM4

HIR1, the co-repressor of histone gene transcription of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, acts as a multicopy suppressor of the apoptotic phenotypes of the LSM4 mRNA degradation mutant [5].
We had previously demonstrated that the first 72 amino acids of the K. lactis Lsm4p (KlLsm4Deltap) can restore cell growth in both K. lactis and S. cerevisiae cells not expressing the endogenous protein [6].
