Disease relevance of mnmE

  • The thdF gene of Escherichia coli encodes a 48 kD protein which is involved in the oxidation of derivatives of the sulphur-containing heterocycle thiophene and which appears to be induced during stationary phase [1].

High impact information on mnmE

  • We prove that o454 is allelic with trmE, a gene involved in the biosynthesis of the hypermodified nucleoside 5-methylaminomethyl-2-thiouridine, which is found in the wobble position of some tRNAs [2].
  • Third, chromosomal integration of SGI1 occurred via a site-specific recombination between a 18 bp sequence found in the circular form of SGI1 and a similar 18 bp sequence at the 3' end of thdF gene in the S. enterica and E. coli chromosome [3].
  • These mutants are different from strains carrying trmC mutations, which are known to confer a methylation deficiency in biosynthesis of 5- methylaminomethyl -2-thiouridine. tRNA from mutants carrying trmE or trmF mutations was shown to carry 2-thiouridine instead of 5- methylaminomethyl -2-thiouridine [4].
  • The gene downstream of rho is homologous to thdF, whose product is involved in thiophene and furan oxidation [5].
  • Interestingly, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis shows that identical levels of the same undermodified form of U34 are present in tRNA hydrolysates from loss-of-function gidA and mnmE mutants [6].

Biological context of mnmE

Associations of mnmE with chemical compounds

  • The thdF gene was subject to substantial catabolite repression by glucose and its expression was also greatly decreased in the absence of oxygen [1].
  • The heterocyclic compounds thiophene carboxylic acid, furan carboxylic acid and proline increased expression of the thdF gene by 2- to 3-fold, but only during the stationary phase [1].
