Disease relevance of galE

A deletion/insertion mutation lacking the 3' end of ORF1, all of galE, and the 5' end of ORF3 was constructed in the parent Hib strain (RM7004) [1].
Escherichia coli dTDP-glucose 4,6-dehydratase and UDP-galactose 4-epimerase are members of the short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase SDR family [2].

These mutants had a galE phenotype, as evidenced by galactose sensitivity, altered LPS when grown in the absence of exogenous galactose, and reduced virulence in infant rats [1].
Ser124, Tyr149, and Lys153 in the active site of UDP-galactose 4-epimerase are located in similar positions as the corresponding Thr134, Tyr160, and Lys164, in the active site of dTDP-glucose 4,6-dehydratase [2].
