Disease relevance of New Caledonia

High impact information on New Caledonia

  • The nickeliferous ores from at least one major smelter in New Caledonia (excess numbers of cancers have been found in these smelter workers) are derived from serpentinized host rocks which contain large amounts of chrysotile asbestos [5].
  • In rural New Caledonia, the prevalence of diabetes was higher in part-Polynesians than in Melanesians: males - 6.6 versus 0.5%; females - 6.3 versus 3.5% respectively [6].
  • The 1918 HA/NA:WSN and WSN recombinant viruses were highly lethal for mice and displayed severe lung pathology in comparison to the nonlethal New Caledonia HA/NA:WSN recombinant virus [7].
  • The world's highest incidence of thyroid cancer has been reported among females in New Caledonia, a French overseas territory in the Pacific located between Australia and Fiji. To date, no molecular genetic studies in this population are available [8].
  • They possess a H1 hemagglutinin antigenically and genetically similar to contemporary A/New Caledonia/20/99 (H1N1)-like viruses and seven genes closely related to those of recent A/Moscow/10/99 (H3N2)-like viruses [9].

Associations of New Caledonia with chemical compounds

  • The NAC strain, isolated from human pneumonia and antigenically related to A/New Caledonia /20/99 (H1N1), was the highest cytotoxic strain and an excellent inducer of caspase-3 activity [10].
  • Tick resistance to pyrethroids in New Caledonia [11].
  • Differing clinical presentation of succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase deficiency in adolescent siblings from Lifu Island, New Caledonia [12].
  • Cattle ticks are controlled by chemical application of two acaricides that are currently used in New Caledonia; deltamethrin is used at 46% of the cattle production facilities and amitraz at the remaining 54% premises where resistance to deltamethrin has been identified [13].
  • The wood and pith of Podocarpus ustus, a parasitic conifer from New Caledonia, is used as an object to demonstrate improvements in sectioning by the ethylenediamine-paraffin method [14].

Gene context of New Caledonia

  • The locus with the strongest departure from neutrality was HLA-DQB1, homozygosity being significantly lower than expected on all islands except New Caledonia [15].
  • After the exercise intervention, exercisers exhibited a greater mean fold increase (MFI) in antibody titer to influenza A/New Caledonia/20/99 (H1N1) and A/Panama/2007/99 (H3N2) than controls, and a greater Granzyme B activity to A/Panama/2007/99 than controls [16].
  • RESULTS: Before vaccination for the 2004-2005 season, SMHPs showed continuously high HAI titer in A/New Caledonia/20/99(H1N1)-strain from March to October in 2004 [17].
  • The homologue of the resistance to dieldrin gene (Rdl) in Drosophila melanogaster was cloned and sequenced in the scolytid beetle Hypothenemus hampei, a coffee pest resistant to cyclodiene insecticides in New Caledonia [18].
  • Haliotrema species are described and/or reported from the gills of butterfly fishes (Chaetodontidae) from coral reefs of the Indo-West Pacific islands: Moorea (French Polynesia), Palau (Micronesia), Wallis (Wallis and Futuna), New Caledonia, Lizard Island and Heron Island (Great Barrier Reef, Australia) [19].
