Flagyl (metronidazole hydrochloride).

Flagyl (metronidazole) is an anti-infective agent used in the treatment of anaerobic bacteria and protozoa. The most common uses of Flagyl in the patient undergoing gastroenterology evaluation and interventions are generally for anaerobic invasion of the gastrointestinal tract causing conditions such as giardiasis. Flagyl is also commonly used in the preoperative treatment of patients prior to colorectal surgery or those at high risk for bacterial contamination during the operative intervention (e.g., patients having emergency abdominal surgery with an unprepared colon). Flagyl is a highly potent anti-infective agent that must be administered and monitored appropriately for safe and effective use.[1]
