Local expression of IFN-gamma mRNA in skin lesions of patients with dermatophytosis.

Delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH) response to dermatophyte antigens is one of the host defense mechanisms in dermatophytosis. Skin lesions of dermatophytosis were examined for the cytokine mRNAs expression using the reverse transcriptase/polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) method. Interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) mRNA was expressed in all of the dermatophytosis lesions. IFN-gamma plays an important role in the effector phase of the DTH reaction. Therefore, these findings indicate that DTH response is elicited in the skin lesions with dermatophytosis.[1]
