Disease relevance of nifK

A total of 96 independent Tn5 insertions within a 39-kilobase-pair (kbp) segment of chromosomal DNA containing the three structural genes for nitrogenase (nifH, nifD, and nifK) from Bradyhizobium japonicum I110 were obtained in Escherichia coli and transferred to the wild-type strain by marker exchange [1].
Structural genes (nifD and nifK) encoding alpha and beta subunits of the MoFe protein of Clostridium pasteurianum (Cp) have been cloned and sequenced [2].

High impact information on nifK

An open reading frame following nifK was identified as nifE [2].
The amino acid sequence deduced from nifK encompasses the partial amino acid sequences previously reported from the isolated beta subunit [2].
The region proximal to nifK appears to contain nifE and the region distal to nifK contains genes homologous to nifUS and fixABC. nifgene(s) from the fourth locus were not identified [3].
