A deletion mutant with a deletion in one gene (boxA) was unable to grow with benzoate as the sole organic substrate, but it was able to grow with 3-hydroxybenzoate and adipate [1].
Upstream of the boxA gene, another gene, boxB, encoding a protein of 55 kDa was found [2].
The gene (boxA, for benzoate oxidation) coding for this protein was cloned and sequenced [2].
