Hantavirus nucleocapsid protein: a multifunctional molecule with both housekeeping and ambassadorial duties.

In recent years important progress has been made studying the nucleocapsid (N) protein of hantaviruses. The N protein presents a good example of a multifunctional viral macromolecule. It is a major structural component of a virion that encapsidates viral RNA (vRNA). It also interacts with the virus polymerase (L protein) and one of the glycoproteins. On top of these "house keeping" duties, the N protein performs interactive "ambassadorial" functions interfering with important regulatory pathways in the infected cells.[1]
