In addition, using an in vitro biochemical assay, we show that the floor plate can synthesize retinoic acid and 3,4-didehydroretinol, the precursor of a second morphogenetically active retinoid, 3,4-didehydroretinoic acid [1].
This absolute and relative retinoid composition was essentially constant with culture age except that 3,4-didehydroretinoic acid was not detected in 3-4-day-old cultures (16-32 cell colonies), suggesting that keratinocyte differentiation may be related to endogenous changes in production of "active" retinoids [2].
Biologic activities of retinoic acid and 3,4-didehydroretinoic acid in human keratinocytes are similar and correlate with receptor affinities and transactivation properties [3].
