The membrane-bound tetrahaem c-type cytochrome CymA interacts directly with the soluble fumarate reductase in Shewanella [1].

The results indicate that the loss of the fumarate reductase enzyme does not affect other anaerobic electron transport systems in this bacterium [2].
In contrast to the wild-type, CMTn-3 could not grow anaerobically with fumarate as the electron acceptor, and it lacked benzyl viologen-linked fumarate reductase activity [2].
Complementation of CMTn-3 with the fumarate reductase gene plus 0.5-kb of upstream DNA restored growth on fumarate [3].
Sequence analysis of the MR-1 genomic database demonstrated that an open reading frame encoding a 65-kDa tetraheme cytochrome c with sequence similarity to the fumarate reductase from S. frigidimarina NCIMB400 was found 8 kb away from the TnphoA-flanking genomic DNA of CMTn-3 [3].
