We examined the structural and functional consequences of incorporating either histone H1, histone B4 or HMG1 into a synthetic dinucleosome containing two 5S rRNA genes [1].
The high mobility group protein HMG-1, which is also present in the soluble nuclear homogenate from X. laevis oocytes, is not required for nucleosome core assembly [2].
Consistent with this hypothesis, we have identified an HMG-1 homologous region on Klp38B that could potentially bind AT-rich DNA sequences [3].
One of these genes was found to encode a homolog of mammalian HMG 1 and 2, hence named HMG-X [4].
