Taking samples under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984.
This article reviews the changes that have been made in England and Wales by Part IV of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 to the powers conferred on the police by the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 to take and to retain for statistical purposes intimate and non-intimate samples from suspects. These changes follow recommendations made by the Royal Commission on Criminal Justice which reported in 1993. They signal a significant increase both in police powers and in the future work of the police surgeon.[1]References
