The structure of a new acidic sugar from the extracellular polysaccharide of Butyrivibrio fibrisolvens strain 49 was determined as 4-O-(1-carboxyethyl)-D-galactose on the basis of 13C-n.m.r. and 1H-n.m.r. spectroscopy, m.s. and chemical degradation studies.[1]
