Disease relevance of agaL

Isolates from a collection of phenotypically melibiose-negative (Mel-) Streptococcus mutans from widely-scattered geographical locations were examined and found to lack the activities of the enzymes alpha-galactosidase and alpha-glucosidase, in addition to being unable to transport melibiose [1].

High impact information on agaL

The loss of RegM increased glucose repression of alpha-galactosidase, mannitol-1-P dehydrogenase, and P-beta-galactosidase activities [2].
S. mutans gtfA mutant strains synthesized less alpha-galactosidase activity inducible by raffinose than wild-type strains [3].
Melibiose (an inducer in wild-type strains) failed to induce significant levels of alpha-galactosidase in the mutant strains [3].
Tests for the production of acid from N-acetylglucosamine, arbutin and melibiose, and the presence of alpha-galactosidase and alpha-glucosidase activities were useful in differentiating these species [4].
