Disease relevance of Fibroma, Ossifying

Three members of a first family had ichthyosis and both affected members of the second had tumours of the jaw, one of which was an ossifying fibroma, suggesting a possible association of these conditions with familial hyperparathyroidism [1].

High impact information on Fibroma, Ossifying

No other endocrine tumors have appeared, but in three patients the hyperparathyroidism was complicated by fibrous maxillary or mandibular tumors that resembled ossifying fibromas rather than the brown tumors generally found in patients with hyperparathyroidism [2].
To the authors' knowledge, ossifying fibromas of calvarial bones have not been described in NF1 [3].
A proliferative activity study analysing morphometric and quantitative aspects of nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) expression was conducted in 10 cases of peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) and 10 cases of ossifying fibroma (OF) [4].

The unique histologic appearance of this particular lesion demonstrates a close relationship between the aggressive ossifying fibroma and a well-differentiated osteogenic sarcoma and advocates the need for more defined microscopic criteria to properly identify such lesions as either benign or malignant [6].
