The role of IFN-gamma in surgical patients.
Interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) was shown to play a central role in the regulation of an adequate immune response to trauma in a variety of human in vitro studies and in animal models. However, clinical studies in surgical patients after various injuries failed to clearly prove efficacy despite the fact that all studies have shown enthusiastic in vitro effects. This review summarizes the available data about IFN-gamma after elective operations and accidental trauma and speculates about the further therapeutic potential of this cytokine.[1]References
