Maternal systemic lupus erythematosus and hydranencephaly in a neonate: a case report.

Hydranencephaly is characterized by absent cerebral hemispheres replaced by fluid-filled sacs in a normal skull. Herein we report the case of a premature neonate with hydranencephaly born to a mother with systemic lupus erythematosus. Although numerous etiologies have been proposed, an association between maternal systemic lupus erythematosus and neonatal hydranencephaly has not previously been reported.[1]
