Intravenous self-administration of nomifensine in rats: implications for abuse potential in humans.

Rats acquired and maintained intravenous self-administration of nomifensine, a new antidepressant compound. Additional experiments implicated dopamine-containing neurons in this behavior. These findings, along with the marked pharmacological similarities between nomifensine and such drugs as cocaine and methylphenidate, indicate a potential for nomifensine abuse by humans.[1]
