Bone scintigraphy for neonatal osteomyelitis: simulation by extravasation of intravenous calcium.

Intravenously administered calcium gluconate has become increasingly popular in the treatment of neonatal tetany. Occasionally, extravasation results in cellulitis, leading to a clinical diagnosis of superimposed osteomyelitis. Osseous scintigraphy, as the accepted modality in the early detection of osteomyelitis, would tend to be used in this circumstance. This case illustrates a false-positive result, probably due to soft-tissue calcification.[1]
