Isolation, characterization and protection studies in mice of a streptomycin-dependent mutant of Streptococcus suis type 1/2.

An avirulent, streptomycin-dependent (Str-D) mutant of Streptococcus suis type 1/2 was produced and characterized by its antimicrobial susceptibility, growth kinetics, biochemical reactions and reversion rate. Homologous and heterologous vaccine trials in mice resulted in complete protection against challenge with S. suis types 1 and 1/2 and partial protection against challenge with S. suis type 2.[1]
