A combination of the polymerase chain reaction and a novel ELISA-type DNA colourimetric assay (developed from studies with a retrovirus from man) was used in a preliminary study to detect DNA from avian infectious laryngotracheitis virus [1].
An infectious laryngotracheitis virus (ILTV, gallid herpesvirus 1) gene homologous to glycoprotein D of herpes simplex virus (HSV) was identified and characterized by its nucleotide and derived amino acid sequence [2].
