Elevated preoperative fasting serum glucose levels increase the risk of postoperative mediastinitis in patients undergoing open heart surgery.

We conducted a case-control study to investigate the relationship between preoperative fasting serum glucose and postoperative mediastinitis in patients undergoing open heart surgery. Multivariate analysis revealed that a glucose level of 126 mg/dL or greater was associated with a significantly increased risk of mediastinitis (OR, 5.25; P = .002).[1]
