Functioning methionine-S-sulfoxide reductases A and B are present in human skin.

Methionine residues in the structure of proteins and peptides are especially sensitive to oxidation by hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) yielding both the (R) and (S) diastereomers of methionine sulfoxide. This commentary shows that both diastereomers of methionine sulfoxide (R and S) can be repaired in the human epidermis by methionine sulfoxide reductases A and B, respectively.[1]
