Completion of the nucleotide sequence of the 'maltose B' region in Salmonella typhimurium: the high conservation of the malM gene suggests a selected physiological role for its product.

We have subcloned and sequenced the genes malF and malM of Salmonella typhimurium, thereby completing the determination of the nucleotide sequence of its 'maltose B' regulon. The malM gene, encoding a periplasmic protein of unknown function in Escherichia coli, is a highly conserved as genes encoding proteins of known function from the same region.[1]
