Sick sinus syndrome: an adenosine-mediated disease.
It is suggested that adenosine is a mediator of the paroxysmal bradycardias and tachycardias characterising the sick sinus syndrome. Increased sensitivity to adenosine could account for the arrhythmias, which might therefore be suppressed by an adenosine antagonist such as theophylline.[1]References
