Selecting a mammalian species for the separation of X- and Y-chromosome-bearing spermatozoa.

All (524) male karyotypes in An Atlas of Mammalian Chromosomes (Hsu & Benirschke, 1967-1977) were visually estimated for the chromatin difference between the X- and Y-chromosome-bearing spermatozoa. After more exact measurement of axial chromatid length for 100 karotypes, 24 species were found in which the difference between X and Y chromosomes was greater than 6.2%. It is suggested that such species would be the best for attempts to separate the X- and Y-bearing spermatozoa.[1]
