Disease relevance of Elemicin

Three allylbenzenes from Asiasarum heterotropoides, methyleugenol (1), elemicin (2) and gamma-asaron (3) showed suppressive effects on umu gene expression of the SOS response in the Salmonella typhimurium OY1001/1A2 umu test against the mutagen 2-amino-3,4-dimethylimidazo[4,5-f ]quinoline (MeIQ) [1].

High impact information on Elemicin

Abuse of nutmeg (Myristica fragrans Houtt.): studies on the metabolism and the toxicologic detection of its ingredients elemicin, myristicin, and safrole in rat and human urine using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry [2].
Bioassay-guided fractionation of the methanolic extract resulted in isolation of suppressive compounds in the PCA test: methyleugenol (1), elemicin (2), gamma-asarone (3), (-)-asarinin (4), and (-)-sesamin (5) [3].
Furthermore, elemicin (2) and (2E,4E,8Z,10E)-N-isobutyl-2,4,8,10-dodecatetraenami de (6) were found to exhibit an inhibitory action on 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) from RBL-1 cells [3].
On the other hand, it was shown that elemicin is not synthesized via myristicin but from the possible common precursor, methyleugenol, in the plant having the dominant gene E. These results validate the hypothetical pathways proposed by Hegnauer and Fujita [4].
Elemicin did induce UDS in hepatocytes from male rats [5].

Associations of Elemicin with other chemical compounds

It was postulated that these effects could be attributable to metabolic formation of amphetamine derivatives from the main nutmeg ingredients elemicin (EL), myristicin (MY), and safrole (SA) [2].
