These results indicate that the limiting mobility of the midplane hydrocarbon region of the membranes formed by macrocyclic archaeol and caldarchaeol lipids play a significant role in reducing the permeability properties of the lipid membrane [1].
Following mild hydrolysis to remove the polar head groups, only two chromatographically distinct core lipids were found in significant amounts in Methanosarcina barkeri (and Methanosarcina mazei) consisting of 43% 2,3-di-O-phytanyl-sn-glycerol (C20,20-diether) and 57% C20,20-hydroxydiether [2].
Analysis of the hydrolyzed core lipids by thin-layer chromatography (TLC) revealed the presence of archaeol and caldarchaeol [3].
H. volcanii plasma membranes contain all of the enzyme activities for synthesis of N-linked glycoproteins and archaeol-based glycolipids [4].
